Field Hockey Continues Standout Season with 5-2 Win over Salve

2017 Sep 22

The Lasell College field hockey team improved to a program-best 7-0 after defeating non-conference Salve Regina Seahawks 5-2 on Thursday afternoon at Grellier Field.

The result marks the Lasers' first victory against the Seahawks since the two began competing in 2014.

Lasell got on the board first, as senior Nikki Pignone (Ipswich, Mass.) scored off a breakaway in the 23rd minute. Eric Connors (South Berwick, Maine) gave the Lasers a 2-0 lead just two minutes later, scoring off the rebound.

In the 44th minute, Claire Shepard (Huntington Beach, Calif.) increased the Lasers lead to 3-0, blasting her second goal of the season in the lower left corner.

Salve Regina answered back in the 47th minute, as Amber Cody (Pawling, N.Y.) cuts the Lasers lead to 3-1. Four minutes later Ashley Cody (Pawling, N.Y.) brought the Seahawks within one.

Coming out of a timeout, the Lasers regained momentum as sophomore Samantha Taylor (Hanover, Mass.) scored a stretching goal off a cross from Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.), to take a 4-2 lead in the 54th minute. Shepard sealed the victory in the 66th minute, scoring her second of the afternoon off a cross from Taylor.

Lasell currently sits atop eight Division III field hockey team statistical rankings, including Goals Per Game, Assists Per Game, and Save Percentage.

Senior Denise Landry (New Milford, Conn.), who sits second in the nation in individual save percentage, contributed eight saves in the Lasers non-conference victory. Jessie Serverino (Branford, Conn.) recorded six saves for the Seahawks in the loss.
