Lasell Men's Volleyball Splits Matches at Johnson & Wales

2018 Mar 26

The Lasell College men's volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday afternoon at the Wildcat Center at Johnson & Wales University, dropping the first match to the host Wildcats in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) match, 3-0, and defeating Medgar Evers Colllege, 3-0 in a non-conference clash in the second match.

Lasell went five sets with Johnson & Wales a week ago in Lasell's gym, but the Wildcats needed just three sets to knock off the Lasers, 27-25, 25-16, and 25-17. Lasell bounced back to take down Medgar Evers in three sets, 25-25, 25-25, and 25-25. The Lasers are now 3-4 in GNAC matches, 6-16 overall.

The Lasers had a balanced attack against JWU. Sophomore Scott Sterenberg (Oceanside, N.Y.) made a team-high six kills, sophomore Janci Soto (Lawrence, Mass.) added five winners, and freshmen Aaron Waitekus (Norwood, Mass.) and Conor Leary-Watson (Reading, N.J.) had four kills apiece. Junior setter Andy Henriquez (Lawrence, Mass.) had four kills and 20 assists, and junior Jordan Aprea (Newington, Conn.) posted a team-high 15 digs.

Lasell was tied with JWU early on in the first set, and was within a point or two most of the set. The Lasers came back to tie the score at 22-all, and took the lead a couple times after that, but the Wildcats fought off two set-points to claim the first set, 27-25. JWU went on a 9-1 runs midway through both the second and third sets in both to open up a double-digit lead en route to the wins.

Freshman reserves Greg Monteiro (New Bedford, Mass.) and Brandon Kurina (Marlborough, Mass.) led the Lasers in the win over Medgar Evers, Monteiro with a season-high 11 kills and Kurina with a season-high 10 winners. Sophomore Eric Silveria (Pawtucket, R.I.) made 30 assists, and freshman Cobi Moore (Hampstead, N.H.) made 11 digs.

Lasell returns home for two tough GNAC matches this week, hosting Rivier University on Tuesday, March 27 (7:00 p.m.) and Emerson College on Thursday, March 29 (7:00 p.m.)
