Lasell Softball wraps up regular season with GNAC sweep of Regis

2018 Apr 30

Freshman Hailey Haskins (Franklin, N.H.) pitched a five-hit shutout Saturday afternoon to lead Lasell College to 6-0 victory and a sweep of Regis College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader at Regis Field. Sophomore Arianna Genovese (Rocky Hill, Conn.) hit a three-run home run to lead Lasell to a victory in the first game, 5-3.

Lasell wraps up the regular season with an 11-25 overall record and a 10-14 mark in the GNAC. The 10 conference wins for the Lasers is the most in a season since the 2011 season, and the 11 wins is the most since 2014. Regis has a 7-21 overall record and a 3-17 GNAC mark.

The Lasers are tied for eighth in the conference with eight wins, but will have to wait until Monday, April 30, for the conclusion of all GNAC games for the season to learn of their playoff hopes. Lasell is in a tight battle with Mount Ida College and Norwich University for the final spot in the tournament.

Game 1 - Lasell 5, Regis 3

The first inning told the story in game one with all eight runs coming in the opening frame. Lasell put five runs on the board in the top half, Regis came back with three in the bottom half, and that ended up as all of the runs in the game.

Genovese set the tone for the game, delivering a three-run homer after Victoria Spellman (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Alexis Truesdale (Wakefield, Mass.) reached base to open the game. The Lasers tacked on a pair of unearned runs before the top of the first closed on RBI singles by freshman Sarah Walton (Poland, Maine) and senior Ashley Gatchell (Franklin, Mass.)

Regis worked itself back in the game in the bottom half of the innings. Brianna Napoleone (Medford, Mass.) put the Pride on the board with an RBI hit, then later, along with Ellery Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.), scored an unearned run and the first closed with Lasell up 5-3.

Sophomore Nicole Arcese (Holliston, Mass.) took earned the win for Lasell in a complete game effort allowing one earned run on four hits. Pride starter Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.) was lifted in the first inning with no outs for Alyssa Rossillo (Sudbury, Mass.) who pitched the remainder of the game but did not factor in the decision.

Game 2 - Lasell 6, Regis 0

The back end of the doubleheader saw a pair of pitchers duel until five seventh-inning runs from Lasell blew the game wide open. Freshman Hailey Haskins (Franklin, N.H.) went the distance in the circle for Lasell, scattering five hits and one strikeout over seven scoreless innings for the win.

Petillo earned the start again and was sharp through four complete innings, tossing scoreless ball and giving up only two hits. Rossillo navigated well through the Laser order after coming in to start the fourth but gave up a run in the fifth which proved to be all Lasell would need.

Kelsey Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) led the Pride with a pair of hits with Bethany Hector (Jaffrey, N.H.) adding three hits including a double and an RBI. Haskins helped her own cause with two hits and two runs.
